Most Common Distractions While Driving

Distracted driving may be one of the most pressing issues of our time. Eating, fumbling with the radio and even gawking at things other than the road in front of us have always been issues for drivers. However, the most pressing threat to attentive driving is the cell phone. Cell phones have been in mainstream use for at least the past 10 years, but with each new innovation and tech offering we become more comfortable using them in the car instead of giving full attention to the road.

Texting is the most common form of distracted driving. Sending a few words or looking at a text may seem innocent, but many don’t realize what could happen until it is too late. Roads and highways are often filled with other drivers, wildlife and road hazards. Full attention should be given to the task of driving, because you never know what may be in your path.

You may not believe it until you see it yourself, but some drivers watch videos while they drive. This habit is as stupid as it is bold and if caught the driver may be placed under arrest for reckless endangerment.

Distracted driving can be as deadly as drunk driving, but many don’t give a second though to eating and drinking behind the wheel. Instead why not have a small snack before getting into your car and saving meals for times that you can sit and enjoy them. Often times these bad habits are combined with cell phone use making it all the more dangerous.

Luckily there are many hands free devices that will allow you to place a call or a text without taking your eyes off the road. Staying connected while behind the wheel is possible with a small investment in a Bluetooth device or properly equipped vehicle.  There are many distractions in life, but protecting yourself and the others around you is paramount.
